Massey University said a student at its Wellington campus contracted the disease and was taken to hospital over the weekend.

He had since recovered and been discharged, the university said.

The university was alerted yesterday and was asking students to be aware of symptoms, a spokesperson said.

The Wellington case follows the death of 20-year-old Dunedin student Brittany Arthur, who died suddenly from meningitis earlier this month.
