Man arrested over Auckland hammer attack

A 21-year-old man has been arrested after another man was hit on the head with a hammer and robbed near his west Auckland home.

Police said the attacker hit the 23-year-old and demanded money on Saturday night, before fleeing with his cellphone and car keys.

The victim had injuries to his skull that had to be treated in hospital.

The police said the victim did not know the accused man.

The 21-year-old was due to appear in the Waitakere District Court tomorrow, charged with injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and aggravated robbery.

A police spokesperson said the victim was released today from hospital and was expected to make a full recovery.
