Earthquake strikes off East Cape

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of East Cape.

The quake was centred 100 km north-east of Te Araroa.

The quake hit about 10am at a depth of 25km, about 100km north-east of Te Araroa.

The Geonet website has described the quake, which was felt as far north as Great Barrier Island and as far south as Christchurch, as severe.
