A former Auckland Council roading manager who accepted more than $100,000 in bribes from an engineering firm has been sentenced to 10 months' home detention.

Barrie Kenneth James George, 69, had earlier pleaded guilty to two charges laid by the Serious Fraud Office.

As group manager for transport for the Rodney District Council in 2008, he awarded an engineering company more than $8 million in contracts.

George took more than $57,000 worth of travel and accommodation, paid for by the engineering firm.

The same pattern continued in 2010 when Rodney District Court became part of the Auckland Council, and he accepted an additional $46,000 in travel and accommodation.

He was sentenced to the home detention at the High Court in Auckland today.

Two others accused of co-offending with George will stand trial later this year.
