Brent Paul Brown, 45, was found at a property in Poaka Avenue in Dinsdale on Wednesday evening last week.

It was initially treated as an unexplained death.

Police said a post mortem determined he had sustained multiple injuries, but the cause of death was inconclusive.

Detective Inspector Hywel Jones said Mr Brown was attacked with a blunt instrument.

"This is why a homicide inquiry has now commenced."

Police have spoken to other occupants in the house where Mr Brown lived but were seeking anyone else who had seen him from midday on Tuesday up until the time of his death, which was before 11pm on Wednesday evening.

"Police staff continue to conduct a forensic examination of the scene and we are continuing to search for the weapon," Mr Jones said.
