A man who dropped onto Auckland's central motorway system in an effort to evade police is in a stable condition in hospital.
Police say two men were fighting on Karangahape Road shortly before 11pm on Friday and ran in separate directions once officers arrived.
One of the men fell about 10m from the road's overbridge trying to get away.
The man, thought to be in his early 20s, suffered severe leg and chest injuries.
Police say alcohol may have clouded the man's judgment of the distance below.
They stress they were following the man on foot only and do not consider the incident a police pursuit.
