Police said four 20-litre black containers of the acid were stolen during a burglary on Monday night on Wingatui Road in Mosgiel.

They said anyone handling the containers needed to be "extremely careful" and the burglars were at serious risk of harm.

Staff who handle the acid have to wear highly protective gear.

The stolen nitric acid is normally used in hydroponics and would be clearly labelled as acid, police said.

A number of tools, including chainsaws were also taken, police said.
