Quakes continue to shake East Coast

7:50 am on 15 September 2016

The East Coast of the North Island continues to be rattled by earthquakes, with two sharp shocks this morning.

The two quakes were centered about 70km north-east of Te Araroa

GNS Science said a magnitude-5 tremor struck at 4.09am at a depth of 20km, followed by another magnitude-4.6 shake at 5.55am, at about the same depth.

The intensity of both quakes was measured as 'strong' by GNS.

The region has been shaken by dozens of quakes in the past few weeks, after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit at the start of the month, raised fears of a tsunami.
