A woman is trapped in a car in a river after it plunged about 200 metres off a cliff in Coroglen, south of Whitianga in Coromandel
The car went off the road at 11.30am today and the Fire Service said the male driver managed to escape.
The female passenger remains trapped in the car and a specialist rope rescue team is working to free her and bring her up the cliff.
The Fire Service said it understood the woman had "moderate injuries".
Rescue efforts have been hampered by extremely foggy weather conditions.
They said the incident has caused the closure of Tapu Coroglen Road at State Highway 25.
