Police are appealing for information about an audacious robbery of an Auckland supermarket at knifepoint.

Police say two men took tens of thousands of dollars from Countdown in the suburb of Botany at 12.20am on Wednesday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Pizzini says one created a distraction yelling and swearing at staff, while the other, wearing a hockey mask, threatened staff in the supervisor's area with a machete.

Mr Pizzini says both posed as shoppers beforehand and were wearing distinctive clothing before the robber changed.

He says the pair the sped away in a large silver or grey sedan.
