Power was knocked out to nearly 2000 homes in the Auckland suburb of Remuera this morning following a transformer fire.

The Fire Service was called to the blaze on Abbotts Road at about 6.30am.

Power in the area had been switched off, cutting the supply to about 2000 homes, but had now been restored to most of them.

High extension foam was being used to control the flames.

Road blocks are in place near Lunn Avenue and Grand Drive, and delays are expected.
