Police have arrested a 14-year-old boy and a 62-year-old woman has a serious head injury following a carjacking in Auckland.

The woman was sitting in her parked car outside New Lynn Mall when she was approached about 1.30pm, the police said.

Police said there was an altercation, the woman ended up on the ground and her attacker drove off in her vehicle.

The woman was discovered coming in and out of consciousness, with a serious head injury, by a member of the public, they said.

Detective Senior Sergeant Roger Small said they then received reports of the victim's car being driven erratically on the South Western Motorway, including in the wrong direction.

A teenager was arrested in Mangere.

The 14-year-old would appear in the Youth Court tomorrow, facing a number of charges.

The woman was in Auckland Hospital in a stable condition.

The police were not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident, Mr Small said.

"Police are now asking any members of the public who may have seen a 2000 blue Toyota RAV4 being driven between the hours of 1.30pm and 3pm in both the New Lynn area and on the South Western motorway," he said.

"This will assist police in building a full picture of what has occurred today."
