They did not say how the people died, but there were indications they were all known to each other.

A visitor to the house found the bodies.

Police said the deaths would be unsettling and alarming to the community, but there was no ongoing risk to the public.

They would not confirm a Holden Vectra car found at the house, near the remote coastal settlement of Tahāroa, was that of Ross Bremner.

Mr Bremner was being sought in connection with a stabbing this week that left his mother Clare, 60, dead and his father Keith, 64, critically injured in hospital.

Neither Ross Bremner nor his Holden Vectra have been seen since the stabbings of his parents on Tuesday in Otorohanga, about an hour's drive inland from Tahāroa.

However police did say this was a car they had been seeking for several days.

Officers were guarding the scene and were trying to identify the victims and notify the next of kin.

Police would not comment further until a news conference this afternoon, due in part to the remoteness of the coastal settlement where the bodies were found.
