The search has been concentrated around the harbour mouth since early Saturday afternoon, when the pair were spotted being swept out in the current.

A member of the public reported concerns for the divers' safety about 1pm, police said.

Conditions were rough, with large swells.

Two boats, one from the Coastguard and one from South Port, had spent the afternoon and early evening but the search was now suspended until new informtaion came in, police said.

Police were also trying to find the drivers of a pair of white four-wheel-drive vehicles seen at Bluff Harbour this morning.

The vehicles were seen at about 10.30am to 11am in the Marine Parade area, and two people were seen entering the water while a third man waited on land.

Police urgently want to speak to anyone connected with the group.
