New Zealand Rugby has turned down an offer to help pay for a statue of Richie McCaw, planned for the North Otago town where he began his career.

The Kurow Museum Committee needs to raise up to $95,000 for a life-sized statue of the World Cup-winning skipper.

The chair of the committee, John Sturgeon, said it called on New Zealand Rugby for funding support, but it told them it could only help by supplying some memorabilia.

Mr Sturgeon said more than $5000 had been donated so far, but a timeline for the statue could not be established until all the money needed was raised.

"The whole thing depends on funding coming in.

"If the funding is forthcoming and it's pretty quick well we can get onto it, but we actually need six months or more for the actual statue to be formed and completed."

Mr Sturgeon said he was very confident the project would go ahead.
