The lawyer for a woman accused of using a metal strap on her daughter and threatening her with a bat says his client's actions were the "minor disciplining of children".

The woman appeared in the Wellington District Court this morning on charges of assaulting the 13-year-old girl.

The 58-year-old was also charged with slapping another child on several occasions between 2008 and 2016.

Her lawyer, Robert Lithgow, described her actions as the "minor disciplining of children" and said his client was now taking part in a non-violence course for women.

The woman, whose name was suppressed to protect the identities of the children, entered no plea and was remanded on bail.
