A Hutt Valley bus driver has been left with head injuries after being dragged from the vehicle in a botched robbery in the early hours of this morning.

Three teenagers tried to steal the driver's cash box on Fergusson Drive in Upper Hutt, but ran off when they were unsuccessful.

Senior sergeant Quentin Ward said the injured driver was taken to Hutt Hospital, and was discharged earlier today.

"Three males have been the last on the bus, and as they have gone to get off the bus, they have grabbed the cash box and the driver has attempted to protect the cash box and ended up getting dragged out of the bus, and has ended up suffering facial injuries as a result of this."

Mr Ward said the police wanted to hear from anyone who might have seen the three board the bus at the Ropata Medical Centre in central Lower Hutt.
