No one was in the building at the time.

A fire service spokesperson said 32 firefighters attended the blaze, which appeared to have started in the kitchen.

The fire was extinguished and firefighters were damping down hot-spots.

The police said State Highway 60 through Appleby is closed between Three Brothers corner and McShane Road.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area.

Waimea Estates export manager Martin Carrington said the cafe was badly damaged and it would affect the vineyard's business.

"Certainly the cellar door, they had full bookings over the weekend. And it's the beginning of the whitebait season on the menu, so it's a bit of shame really."
