Woman avoids jail for delivering methamphetamine

A woman who drove from Auckland to Wellington to deliver methamphetamine to drug dealers has escaped a jail sentence.

Cheyenne Tate, 31, was sentenced in the High Court in Wellington today to 11 months home detention on several charges, including possession of methamphetamine for supply.

Tate was arrested as part of Operation Fantail, a police investigation into a large-scale methamphetamine supply operation.

Her lawyer said her role was no more than that of a mule, but Justice Collins said the offending was pre-meditated, and with only 24 hours' notice Tate was able to obtain the drugs and bring them from Auckland to Wellington.

However, he said, she had written a letter expressing remorse and was assessed as being at a low risk of re-offending.
