Deal signed on proposed marina

A memorandum of understanding to establish a marina in Whakatane has been signed between the marina society and the district council.

The matter is in regard to the sale and purchase of council-owned land for the development of the marina.

It is described by the society as a key milestone in the project.

Whakatane Mayor Colin Holmes says the society can now proceed with a resource consent application, with some certainty about the availability of the land.

The purchase price would be determined by an independent market valuation, if the consent is granted.

The Bunyan Road site, north of the Whakatane River, was acquired by the council in 1982 for the purpose of developing playing fields that never eventuated.
