A Christchurch-based manufacturing company is proposing to close its New Zealand operation with the loss of 170 jobs.

General Cable provides copper, aluminium and fibre optic cable for buildings and infrastructure.

Part of the United-States-based General Cable Corporation, it has been in New Zealand since 1946.

The company said it planned to wind down operations in Christchurch and Auckland, and had started consultation with its employees.

If the proposal goes ahead, 160 jobs would be lost in Christchurch and 10 in Auckland by next March.
