Senior firefighter Nick Graham said the boy was impaled through the cheek of one of his buttocks.

Ambulance staff gave him local anaesthetic and cut through the skin to free him. This meant firefighters did not need to use specialist cutting equipment.

Mr Graham said the fence was about two metres high. Each metal fencepost had an arrow-shaped tip.

"He was a brave, brave little fella. I'd be screaming more than him," Mr Graham said.

"They were just playing silly buggers, I think, and trying to climb over."

The boy was taken to Middlemore Hospital, which said he should go home tonight.
