An Auckland man who died while taking part in an ocean swim event at Mt Maunganui yesterday has been named as Bruce Smith.

He was 68. The police said the cause of his death was still being investigated.
He went missing near Leisure Island yesterday morning during the swim event.
Surf lifesavers found the man and took him to shore in a rescue boat.
Paramedics and lifeguards tried to revive him, but he died at the scene.
The police said the death had been referred to the coroner.
