Police have not yet been able to formally interview an 11-year-old boy who was abducted and sexually assaulted in West Auckland.

He had just got off the train at Ranui station on Thursday afternoon when he was taken by a man in a grey van who had asked for directions.

Police said that because of the traumatic nature of what happened, specialist interviewers had so far had only a brief conversation with the boy.

It would be up to them to decide when it was appropriate to speak to him again, police said.

Police had received more than 40 calls from members of the public with information, but were still appealing for sightings of the van.

There will be a police presence in the area before and after school tomorrow.

Anyone with information about the attack, or who may have seen the grey van, should contact Detective Senior Sergeant Jason MacIntosh on 021 191 2659, or give information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
