A man was shot in the head with a crossbow bolt at a remote property in south Wairarapa in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The victim is now in intensive care at Wellington Hospital, where he is in a serious, but stable, condition.
Police said three men - aged 18, 18 and 23 - were confronted by a fourth man at 3am on Sunday, at a remote address at Kahutara near Lake Ferry.
The fourth man fired a crossbow which struck the head of the 23-year-old, who received immediate treatment for his injuries at Masterton Hospital, before being transferred to Wellington.
A 21-year-old man has been arrested and is currently charged with assault. He was due to appear in the Masterton District Court today.
Police said all four men were known to each other.
A crossbow has been recovered by police.
Police said the assault was not gang-related, there was no ongoing risk to the public and they were not seeking anyone else in relation to their investigation.
"I am very comfortable that we have spoken to all of the primary witnesses and that there is no risk to the public now or in the future from this group," said Detective Senior Sergeant Barry Bysouth.
