Police are praising the actions of a girl who ran towards home when a stranger approached her in West Auckland.

A man approached the 11-year-old while she waited for a school bus at Waitakere about 8.30am yesterday.

About a week earlier, an 11-year-old boy from a neighbouring suburb was kidnapped and sexually assaulted.

Police said nothing suggested the two incidents were linked.

They said parents should remind children that if they were approached by someone they did not know or trust, they should run to the nearest public place or shop and find someone who could phone 111.
