Asbestos alert after sportsfield discovery

8:37 pm on 2 December 2016

Contractors upgrading a Dunedin sports field have found material likely to be asbestos.

The Dunedin City Council said work on the Logan Park sports fields started today. The discovery was made while a raised mound at one end of the park was excavated.

Council spokesman Tom Dyer said work stopped immediately. Measures had been put in place to keep contractors and the public safe.

The site has been fenced off, signs put up and the asbestos-like material covered up.

Laboratory tests were expected to confirm tonight whether the material was asbestos.

Mr Dyer said the material appeared to have been buried for some time.
