The Dunedin City Council ordered the tests after contractors upgrading Logan Park made the discovery while excavating a mound on Friday.

Council spokesperson Tom Dyer said work stopped immediately, the site was fenced off, the asbestos-like material covered up and warning signs had put up.

Mr Dyer said all the material would be removed from the site.
