The police are concerned for the safety of two Swiss backpackers who failed to check in after attempting the Tongariro crossing.

They said Simon Oesch and Miriam Haggmann, who were believed to be travelling around the central North Island, had planned to do the crossing on Monday but had not been heard from since.
Acting Sergeant Ross Humphrey said it was possible they had completed the crossing and moved on somewhere else.
Anyone with information about their whereabouts is asked to contact the Taupo police.
