Melissa and Matt Mill and their four children left their home in New Brighton about 2am on 14 November after learning of the tsunami risk in coastal parts of the city.

When they returned four hours later, Mr Mill discovered his work car, sports equipment and an expensive hearing aid device for their daughter had been stolen.

Police said a 24-year-old man would appear in the Christchurch District Court tomorrow on a burglary charge.
