A number of houses north-west of Auckland were evacuated this morning after a truck carrying close to 200 LPG cylinders crashed.

The fire service said the truck ended up on its side on State Highway 16 at Waimauku and the cylinders were strewn across the road.

The cylinders have since been cleared from the road.

The road was down to one lane while the cylinders were cleared and the truck was towed away.

A spokesperson said the houses had only been evacuated as a precaution.

The road was down to one lane and police said drivers should expect delays.
