Family desperate after man found in Waikato River

The family of the man whose body was found in the Waikato River on Tuesday evening are seeking answers as to how he died.

A kayaker found 29-year-old Tama Hurinui Retimana's body near Ann Street at around 7pm on Tuesday. He had on only boxer shorts and socks.

Police are treating his death as suspicious.

Detective Sergeant Terri Wilson said Mr Retimana was a father of two. He lived with his partner on the banks of the eastern side of the river near Pine Beach.

She said Mr Retimana was last seen on Christmas Day.

Police were speaking with his partner, who was helping with inquiries.
