A dairy in Stoke was robbed by a knife-wielding man at on Christmas Day, and a Mobil service station in Tahunanui was robbed earlier today.

The police said a man armed with a knife and wearing a balaclava entered the premises at about 3am and demanded the staff member open the cigarette cabinet and till.

They said the staff member did the right thing by activating a panic alarm, and the man left without taking any property.

He was last seen walking north along Tahunanui Drive, and it is possible he had a bike or car waiting nearby.

The police are advising business owners in the Nelson Bays area to review security arrangements on access to premises late at night, and employees working alone need to be aware of the risks.
