Lake Onoke drowning victim named

Police have confirmed the name of the 34-year-old man from the Philippines who drowned in southern Wairarapa yesterday.

Bennie Palay Hombrebueno was swept out to sea at Palliser Bay yesterday afternoon while fishing near Lake Onoke.

The police said he got into trouble while trying to cross the mouth of the Ruamahanga River.

An extensive search by sea and air began after emergency services were notified of the incident about 2.30pm, and was suspended for the day about 7pm.

Mr Hombrebueno's body was found near the mouth of the river about 11pm.

Police said they had notified his next of kin.
