Olivia and Oliver remain NZ's most popular baby names

Olivia and Oliver are the most popular baby names in New Zealand for a second year running.

The Department of Internal Affairs has just released its list of the top ten names for girls and boys born in 2016.

For girls, Charlotte, Isla, Harper and Ella rounded out the top five.

Sophie dropped from fourth place in 2015, to 10th in 2016.

For boys, Jack, William, Mason and James all remained popular names.

But Leo has moved up the rankings from 24th in 2015, to ninth in 2016.

There were 61,000 babies born in New Zealand last year, and over 18,000 unique first names registered.
