An aggravated robbery in Whangarei that left a man with serious facial injuries is being described by police as a horrific, unprovoked attack by cowards.

Police said the man, who is in his mid-20s, was walking on Lupton Avenue in Whangarei when he was confronted by two men carrying weapons.

They demanded he hand over his personal items before attacking him and taking his belongings.

Police described both men as of Māori or Pacific Island descent, one in his early 20s and of solid build, while the other is of skinny build.

Detective Constable Alistair Todd said police were asking anyone with information to contact them immediately.
