The Greater Wellington Regional Council yesterday put a water quality warning in place for Porirua Harbour at the Rowing Club, after dangerous levels of bacteria were recorded in the water.

It said the high bacterial counts, which mean the water is unsafe for swimming, could be due to heavy rain earlier this week which flushed contaminants from the land into waterways.

But it said the latest tests results showed levels had dropped back to normal, and the area was now deemed safe to swim in.
