Teenager arrested over New Year's campground attack

A Gisborne teenager has been arrested and charged over an alleged sexually motivated attack on a female camper at a campground on the outskirts of Gisborne early on New Year's morning.

The 24-year-old visitor was allegedly attacked in her tent.

She fought back and when other campers arrived to help her, the alleged offender made off in a light-coloured SUV vehicle.

Police said a 16 year-old youth was taken into custody by detectives at an address in the city suburb of Kaiti late yesterday afternoon.

He has been charged with burglary, injuring with intent to injure and attempted sexual violation.

He appeared briefly in the Gisborne Youth Court today and was remanded in custody.

He is due to appear in Gisborne District Court on 9 January.

Detective Sergeant Kevin Ford said the arrest followed information received from the public, which police appreciated.
