Police in Palmerston North have closed their homicide investigation into the death of a Feilding woman who died in 2014.
Karen Makoare, 49, died in hospital in March that year from critical injuries received in her home.
Police said they had exhausted all lines of inquiry and had passed the file to a coroner to make a determination.
On the day after her death, they said they were speaking to those who had interacted with Ms Makoare in the days before the attack.
At that time, they were also seeking expert medical advice on the head injury she had suffered.
