Que and her father, Alan Langdon, left Kawhia Harbour in Waikato on Mr Langdon's 6.4-metre catamaran on 17 December, arriving in the New South Wales town of Ulladulla nearly three weeks later after a journey of 2600km.

Police said a 49-year-old man was due to appear in the Te Awamutu District Court on 25 January.

Que was reunited with her mother on Sunday.

Private investigator Col Chapman told RNZ that Ariane Wyler had arrived in Australia from Switzerland, where she has been since early last month, and Que was now in her care.

Mr Chapman was speaking with RNZ from a vehicle all three were travelling in en route from New South Wales.

Ms Wyler and Que were happy to be together again and were doing well, Mr Chapman said.

Mr Langdon told the ABC the unplanned reunion was "a bit hard to grasp".

"We came in to have some breakfast and while I was preparing breakfast, Que went to the toilet. And when I called out I realised she wasn't there," he said.

"Be strong. I hope you are alright. I send you always my strength."
