Man impaled in South Auckland car crash

A man is in a critical condition after being impaled in a car crash in South Auckland.

Emergency services were called to the crash on Kidd Road in the suburb of Karaka shortly before 5pm.

Fire Service spokesperson Colin Underdown said the car crashed into a fence.

Crews had to wait for an ambulance and a Westpac Rescue Helicopter to arrive before freeing the driver, who had been impaled, he said.

A St John ambulance spokesperson said a 21-year-old man was taken to Auckland Hospital in a critical condition.
