Three seriously injured in Clarence runway crash

4:11 pm on 20 January 2017

The pilot of a small plane that crashed today near Kaikōura was attempting to land when he ran off the farm airstrip.

Three people were seriously injured in the crash, including one who had to be cut from the wreckage.

Two others were stretchered from the aircraft.

The Civil Aviation Authority said the impact of the landing caused the undercarriage to collapse.

Those on board were taken to hospital by helicopter.

Some emergency services needed to use quad bikes to access the area, which has been isolated by large slips caused by the Kaikōura earthquake.
