The incident started when police stopped a vehicle on Wilson Road, Netherton about 6.25pm.

They said, while the officer breath-tested the female driver, two passengers - a man and woman - got out and drove off in the officer's patrol vehicle.

Police chased the car, but abandoned the pursuit because of the high speeds and their "manner of driving".

They found the torched police car in Meremere.

"It appears the vehicle had been set alight, causing extensive damage," police said.

The man and woman had fled.

Police said they arrested a 41-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman in relation to the theft.
