National policy on freedom camping urged

The mayor of Buller is calling for the Government to establish nationwide rules on freedom camping.

Travellers who stay overnight in their campervans on the roadside or in car parks have gained a reputation for littering and using the environment as a toilet.

Buller mayor Pat McManus says it is impossible to enforce any bans on freedom campers at the moment because it is costly to prosecute them.

He says it should be possible to give offenders immediate infringement fines.

He also wants to see all campervans without self-contained toilets banned, apart from areas specifically set aside for freedom camping.
