Police said the 21-year-old was given a lift from Holder Place on the North Shore about 10am last Thursday, to Coast Road in Muriwai, arriving about 11am.

Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Newman said officers had spoken to several people to get a clearer picture around her last known movements.

He said the lines of inquiry led police to a forest near the corner of Coast and Grass Track Roads in Muriwai.

He said search and rescue teams were scouring the area. While there was no reason to suspect foul play, there were concerns for Ms Avison's safety as her actions were out of character.

The police continue to appeal to members of the public for any sightings of Ms Avison, who was last seen wearing black leggings, a white t-shirt and black Nike shoes with white soles.
