Two people have been killed in a crash near Karapiro in the Waikato.
Police were called to the two-car crash at the intersection of State Highways 1 and 29 at about 9.50am.
A third person involved had been seriously injured and was being taken to Waikato Hospital by ambulance.
The serious crash unit was investigating and the intersection would be closed for some time, police said.
Diversions were in place but would add substantial delays to journeys in the area.
