A woman has died after being swept out to sea by a large wave while walking on the beach north of Karamea on the West Coast.
The 70-year-old woman was walking along the water's edge with her partner when the wave hit at about 3.30 yesterday afternoon near the mouth of the Kohaihai River.
The police said her partner tried to save her but she was swept away.
Searchers later found her body .
