A German man charged with attempting to murder his girlfriend by trying to drive a car off a cliff near Cromwell can now be named.

Orchard worker Jan Falke, 20, faces several charges including attempted murder.

He appeared via audio video link in Dunedin High Court today and did not enter a plea.

The police said he and his girlfriend had left a campsite at Champagne Gully and were driving towards Cromwell on 22 January when the accused attempted to drive off a 60-100m cliff.
