Heavy rain and gales may batter parts of the country as a complex trough heads north.

Metservice has issued a weather warning for the South Island's West Coast and the southern part of the North Island, for Sunday night.

It said heavy rain and gale force winds were expected from tomorrow night through to Monday morning.

A complex trough was forecast to move north over the South Island on Sunday night and across the centre of the country on Monday, Metservice said.

The trough would bring heavy rain to the West Coast, as well as the Tararua ranges.

There was also a possibility northwesterly gales could become severe in exposed areas in Marlborough, Wellington and Hawke's Bay.
