Fatal crash in Tararua

One person has died and another is in a critical condition after a car crash in the Tararua District in the lower North Island this morning.

Poor weather meant a rescue helicopter could not land at the site of the crash, on route 52, about 2km south of the Pahiatua Road intersection, and had to go to the nearby township of Pongaroa.

The person with life-threatening injuries was taken by ambulance to the helicopter and flown to Palmerston North Hospital. A third person has minor injuries.

In South Auckland, a person has died in a car crash at Clevedon. Two cars were involved in the crash about 9.30am at the intersection of Monument Road and Tourist Road.

Two other people were injured and were taken to hospital with moderate injuries.

In a third accident today, a person was in a critical condition after a truck and a car collided on State Highway 3 at Mahoenui, Waikato.

The accident happened just after 2am at Hedley Corner, about 5km north of the Awakino Tunnel.
